Diesel Particulate Filters (known as DPFs) are designed to filter out soot that is produced during the combustion process while the engine is running. Over time, this builds up in the filter and the filter needs to be cleaned, or “regenerated”.
This can be done one of two ways:
Passive DPF Regeneration
Passive DPF regeneration is what happens when you drive at high speeds (100ks/h) for extended periods of time. The exhaust gets hot enough to burn off the built up soot and clears the filter that way.
However, most drivers do not drive for long enough periods at those speeds for this to occur, and over time the soot builds up and the diesel particular filter needs to be actively regenerated.
When the soot levels reaches a certain point in the diesel particular filter (45% for most cars), the filter needs to be actively regenerated.
The active regeneration process usually consists of using either diesel or electricity to help burn off the access soot and clear out the filter. Often when it is time to do this, the DPF warning light will come on on the dashboard.
